State of New Jersey Child Care Policy

New Jersey Department of Human Services (DHS) serves individuals and families with low incomes; people with mental illness, developmental disabilities, or late-onset disabilities; people who are blind, visually impaired, deaf, hard of hearing, or deaf-blind; parents needing child care services, child support and/or healthcare for their children; and families facing catastrophic medical expenses for their children.

Project Child Find is a free referral service to identify children with a delay or disability, birth to 21, and to distribute information about early intervention and special education programs.

The Earned Income Credit (EITC) is an income tax credit for people who work full or part time and earn below a certain income level. If you qualify, you'll owe less in taxes and may even get cash back even if you have no tax liability to New Jersey.

Health & Safety Links

The NJ Department of Health and Senior Services works to prevent disease, promote and protect well-being at all life stages and encourages informed choices that enrich quality of life for individuals and communities.

National Resource Center for Health and Safety in Child Care (NRC) The primary mission is to promote health and safety in out-of-home child care settings throughout the nation.

Kids Health, created by The Nemours Foundation's Center for Children's Health Media, is the largest and most visited site on the Web providing doctor-approved health information about children from before birth through adolescence.

The Warmline is a free, statewide 24/7 automated phone service designed to provide Family Child Care Providers and Child Care Center staff with practical, accurate information on relevant health and behavior issues. During business hours, a Warmline nurse can be reached by hitting the star key. The automated system can be reached by dialing 1-800-713-9006.

Special Needs Children

The NJ Department of Health and Senior Services is a link for “Special Child Health Services”. It includes Early Intervention for children up to age three who have developmental delays or disabilities and Case Management Units for children of all ages who have complex medical conditions.

Learning Resource Centers (LRC) are supported through the New Jersey State Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs, PO Box 500, Trenton, New Jersey 08625. The LRC's are funded through IDEA - Part B Funds.

NJ Inclusive Child Care Project, is a project spearheaded by SPAN (Statewide Parent Advocacy Network) and funded by the New Jersey Department of Human Services. The goals of this project are to increase the quality and availability of early care and education for children with special needs and to increase the awareness of families and professionals.

Child Study Team, a group including school staff, parents and other professionals assembled for the purpose of developing an “Individualized Education Program” for eligible students ages 3 to 21. Call the school district where the child lives.
